Philosophical wisdom from the FDS
by comment inlisten to this powerful condemnation of the inane worldly philosophers, socrates and plato, appearing in the april 15, 1956 watchtower article "they are without excuse":.
"who can read their works without being struck with the empty-headedness of their reasonings, as well as with the stupidity of their nonsense when speaking about god?".
the overwhelming intellectual power of such analysis from god's chosen channel is manifest in that the very same words could be applied to our beloved faithful and discreet slave!.

US, a civilized or a barbaric country?
by Kent inus, a civilized or a barbaric country?
i am fully aware i might upset some people on the board by asking what i do in this thread, and i wouldnt be surprised if someone would accuse me of attacking americans again.
i do, however, have a reason for asking and my question is an honest one.

Hi Kent,
The US - even California! - has provisions for "unemployment insurance" and welfare.
I have absolutely no idea what the details of the situations of Farkel or Maximus are, so my imagination fills in the gaps, and I imagine that like many Dubs, our friends gave up their youth to their imaginary invisible jumbo friend and now they have imaginary invisible treasures held in escrow in an imaginary alternate reality, and banks in this reality will not accept "treasure stored up in heaven" as collateral for a loan.

by Nathan Natas inwe may disagree from time to time, but one thing we all share as former dubs is the knowledge of a "home we'll never see" - the phoney paradise we were promised.. if i may, then, i'd like to borrow this song, dedicated to the rescue workers at the world trade center, and send it out to all the supermen, superwomen, supergirls and superboys here.. ====.

Greetings, SuperRadar!
I can't speak for the author of the song, but if I may induldge in some poetic interpretation, I'd suggest that the "one way street" is life, and no matter what we find ("digging for...") in the end we die.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it until it becomes imperative to do otherwise.

Five For Fighting - SupermanI can’t stand to fly
I’m not that naive
I’m just out to find
The better part of meI’m more than a bird... I’m more than a plane
More than some pretty face beside a train
It’s not easy to be meWish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie
About a home I’ll never seeIt may sound absurd... but don’t be naive
Even Heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed... but wont you concede
Even Heroes have the right to dream
It’s not easy to be meUp, up and away... away from me
It’s all right... You can all sleep sound tonight
I’m not crazy...or anything...I can’t stand to fly
I’m not that naive
Men weren’t meant to ride
With clouds between their kneesI’m only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of meIt’s not easy to be me.

It used to be that you could buy a rifle or shotgun and take it home the same day. Now there's a waiting period for rifles and shotguns just as there is for handguns.
An automatic weapon ("fully automatic") is one that keeps firing as long as the trigger is depressed. It is legal to own fully automatic weapons IFF (if and only if) you have a permit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF). I think a permit costs a few hundred dollars.
A semi-automatic weapon reloads itself after each shot (until it's magazine is empty) but does not fire continuously. The trigger must be pulled for each shot. Semi-automatics are available as pistols or rifles.
You can buy a semi-automatic version of an AK-47 in any decent gun shop, just as you can buy a semi-automatic version of the M-16 called the "mini-14" in any gun shop. For about $13,000 you can buy a semi-automatic .50 caliber sniper rifle.
Bolt-action rifles have a magazine of bullets, but after each shot the bolt must be unlocked and cycled to eject the spent cartridge and push a fresh cartridge into place.
Single shot rifles and pistols have to be opened an reloaded after each shot.

Sex is bad...violence is GOOd. :)
by d0rkyd00d injoelbear brought up a point about something on the sex forum that i've been thinking about for a while, and i'm wondering what the answer to my question is.
dunno if this should be on the relationships forum, but here it is anyways.
why is it such a no-no for kids like myself (i'm 16) to see sex, yet so acceptable for us to see violent movies?

Why is it such a no-no for kids like myself (i'm 16) to see sex, yet so acceptable for us to see violent movies?
I think that one practical reason might be that if you see sexual activity, you're going to want a piece of the action, and there could be negative consequences, either emotional ("she belongs to ME!") or physical ("Here's your kid - get a job!") that can have a devastating effect on your life.
If you watch violence, it is likely that any inclination you feel to go get a piece of that action will be offset by your sense of self-preservation, so you WON'T do it.
Stated another way,
In the case of sex, your normal drives will push you toward it and there will be few if any alarms going off in your head telling you to stop, and (one would hope) the object of your attention will also be encouraging you to "get it on." You both could get caught up in something that could lead to your harm.
In the case of violence, the object of your attention will be trying to preserve his own hide, and when you get your nose splattered across your face, your own sense of self-preservation will tell you to STOP.

I discovered that from half.com you can get Frank Capra's six "Why We Fight" films on one VHS tape for less than $20. I got my copy yesterday. It is an amazing piece of work. So many parts of it could be shown today to address the current situation.
Anyone who feels that the American History they learned in the Public School System might be a little lacking should get a copy of "Why We Fight" for their personal collection, or at least borrow the tape from the UN library. (Sorry - couldn't resist. )

Why atheism?
by Skimmer inon varieties of atheism:.
can we even speak of clear and distinct ideological borders among atheists, agnostics, and theists?
absent any commonly accepted scientific proof of the existence of god (or gods), we must consider that the labeling is based on an individual's personal interpretation.
-
Nathan Natas
Hi Skimmer,
I joined the Atheist church near me because I decided I wanted to be stupid and evil, and they promised me "undreamed of wealth" from selling their two magazines, "The Pit" and "Asleep".
Does that fit your preconception well?
